FAQs
Where can I find Brazil nuts?
Brazil Nuts are available raw (with shells and without), roasted, and dry-roasted. They can be eaten raw, roasted, salted in ice cream or in bakery confections. They are available year round but the freshest nuts can be found in late fall to early winter.
When shopping for Brazil nuts keep in mind a well filled nut will not rattle. The shell should not be shriveled as that is an indication of nuts that have aged and are going stale. The Brazil nut should be plump and crisp looking. One pound of nuts in the shell will yield about 1 1/2 cups of nutmeats.
How should I store Brazil nuts?
Unshelled Brazil nuts will keep in a cool, dry place for a few months.
Shelled Brazil nuts should go in an air tight container and can last up to 6 months in the refrigerator.
The best way to store Brazil nuts, if you buy large quantities at once, is to put them in sealable bags and freeze them. This will prevent them from going rancid.
How often should I eat Brazil nuts?
8 nuts equal 1 serving. No more than 3 servings a week is recommended. Because of the high fat content eating Brazil nuts should not just be added to your diet but replace another fatty food.
Adding Brazil nuts to salads or adding the oil to your recipes is another great way to get the nutritional value from Brazil nuts. To see some recipes including Brazil nuts please visit Recipes.
